Hyning Monastery

Volunteering and Monastic Experience Weeks

We welcome those aged 18 – 45 to share in our prayer, work and life for one to two weeks between mid July 2023 and December.

Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning

We welcome those aged 18 – 45 (men and women) to share in our prayer, work and life for one to two weeks between mid July 2023 and December (subject to availability of accommodation as numbers are limited) in order to take time out for God, to experience the riches of monastic life, and to support a small monastic community.

Participants will be provided with free board and lodging and expected to share in at least some of the daily prayer of the Community. There will be about four to five hours of work a day – which could include gardening, fruit and vegetable picking and preparation, housekeeping, work in the guest house and a multitude of other tasks. Everyone will have a weekly day off.

Those coming from outside England will have the opportunity to be immersed in English and to practise and improve their language skills.

All participants will have a sister mentor. Those who wish may receive an introduction to the Rule of St Benedict and Lectio Divina.

If you are interested, please contact the Prioress, Sr Mary Helen, (sistermaryhelen@hotmail.com) providing some basic information about yourself and possible dates you would like to come.

The sisters may not be able to accept all applications.

In certain cases, longer stays may be possible.

The Monastery of Our Lady of Hyning is situated in the North West of England, not far from the Lake District and very close to the sea and Morecambe Bay. Further information about Hyning can be found on the general pages of our website.

There are direct trains from Manchester Airport to Carnforth Station, and mainline UK trains via Lancaster and Carnforth.
